Hypnosis is a natural state in which you access your powerful subconscious (and superconscious) mind to make positive changes in your life.
The Big Three Experience: Body, Mind and Spirit.
The human mind consists of the Conscious Mind, the Subconscious Mind, and the Superconscious Mind.
The Conscious Mind (our cognitive mind) is where we experience choice, free will, and willpower, our five senses, reasoning, logic, judgement and understanding. We engage our conscious mind about 5-10 % of our waking time. It is the captain of our ship.
The Subconscious Mind controls our autonomic nervous system: how fast our heart beats, our blood pressure, how much acid is produced by the stomach, whether the muscles are tense or relaxed, our immune system, our intestinal function. It is where automation occurs such as eyes blinking, salivation, breathing, walking, etc. It is also where we store memories and beliefs. It is the seat of our emotions and imagination. Its primary purpose is to protect us–to move us away from pain. Ideas, thoughts, beliefs and emotions stored in our subconcious determine how we behave.
The Superconscious Mind is our connection to God, the Divine, Universal Mind (whatever term you prefer). It is where creativity, intuition, peace, and grace reside. We receive “divine inspiration” from our Superconscious Mind.
The Critical Factor, is the filter that allows information into the subconcious–where it is accepted as true. Willpower alone is often ineffective in attaining an objective or goal; i.e., if a desire for change is not congruent with our subconscious mind it is very difficult to change.
When people hear the word “hypnosis” they think about stage hypnosis or mind control in a movie. While comedy shows with hypnosis are indeed entertaining, there is no “mind control” happening. Hypnosis is a natural state in which you access your powerful subconscious mind in order to make positive changes.
Myth: You can’t lie while in hypnosis.
The truth is while hypnotized you maintain full control of your faculties. If your mind believes a lie will protect you, then you will be able to lie.
Myth: Hypnosis is mind control.
Not true. As hypnotherapists, we work with you to create positive suggestions and help re-frame thinking patterns that no longer work for you. You remain in full control at all times. If you hear a suggestion that you don’t agree with or don’t understand, your subconscious mind will automatically reject it.
Myth: Hypnosis is some form of Black Magic or is Supernatural.
Hypnotherapists are not psychics nor are they palm readers with special abilities. Hypnosis has been scientifically studied and effectively used for centuries by renowned doctors & psychologists such as Dr. Sigmund Freud, Dr. Carl Jung, Dr. Milton Erickson and Dr. Franz Mesmer.
A hypnotic induction combined with deepening techniques help relax the client’s concious mind and critical factor (the filter between the conscious and subconscious mind). A significant part of our critical thinking forms at a young age before our adult wisdom forms and we become mature. Therefore, many things that we believe are true about ourselves could be based on outdated ideas, thoughts, and beliefs.
During hypnosis, positive suggestions are received by the client. As critical thinking is relaxed, the hypnotherapist guides the client to focus on positive input and desired outcomes. This “reprograms” thinking and subsequent behavior, which becomes automatically driven by the subconscious mind after the hypnosis session is over. Old thinking programs are updated with new ideas from the wisdom and intellect of the mature adult reasoning mind. For most people, positive changes occur over the course of several sessions with reinforcement and positive suggestions between sessions. Everyone experiences hypnosis differently.
